Manchester United superstar Wayne Rooney will sign a £86 million contract this week and will become the highest paid player in the Premier League history.

The 28-year-old has been one of the star performers for Manchester United this season, and the England striker will finally end speculation about his future by signing a new 5½-year deal worth about £300,0000 a week that will tie him to Old Trafford until June 2019.

Rooney will return from Dubai later this evening but The Times reports that a deal has been agreed in principle by all parties and formally it could be announced tomorrow or Wednesday.

The news will come as a huge relief to David Moyes, whose side has been struggling horribly in the league, and with 11 points adrift of Liverpool, the danger lingers that the Red Devils may not finish in top four this season.

Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic is set to leave the club after the end of the season and in his place, Wayne Rooney would be given the captain’s armband.

Rooney wanted to delay his decision on his future until later this season or after the World Cup, but his thinking has changed in the past month.

Moyes will be given a hefty transfer war-chest in the summer and the Red Devils are targeting about six new arrivals, depending on how many players depart, with Edward Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, has already admitted that the club could spend “in a way that perhaps we haven’t seen in recent years”.
