Everton manager Roberto Martinez appeared to confirm that his side will secure the signing of Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku this summer, with the Spaniard telling fans that the 21-year-old Belgian will ‘of course’ sign for the Toffees.
Lukaku spent the last season on loan at Goodison park, scoring 16 times in 33 games for the Premier League side and they are eager to sign the bustling striker on a permanent basis. Negotiations are said to be ongoing, but Martinez seems quite confident that he will get his man, replying to questions about his pursuit with: ‘Of course we’ll get him!’
While the words of the former Wigan man should probably be taken with a pinch of salt, considering his laughter and apparent eagerness to slip away from shirt signings, it will no doubt increase speculation that the Lukaku is indeed on his way park to Merseyside, with Everton’s Head of Recruitment Ian Atkins also telling talkSPORT that he believes the striker wants to return to the club:
‘Romelu had a terrific season for Everton last year and I know everyone at the football club wants to see him back,’ Atkins said,
‘Hopefully things can be sorted out, I think he’s quite settled in his mind that he wants to come to Everton, and hopefully he’ll be pulling on our blue shirt again next term.
‘Our loan signings all did brilliant for us last season. Gareth Barry has signed permanently now which is fantastic, and hopefully Lukaku will as well.’
The young striker has also been linked with a surprise move to Champions League holders Real Madrid, with the arrival of both Diego Costa and Lukaku’s footballing idol Didier Drogba seemingly spelling the end of his stop-start career in West London.
What do you think? Should Lukaku head off permanently to Everton? Are Chelsea making a mistake in letting him go?
