Dutch legend Ruud Gullit says he is surprised to see Manchester United didn’t sign a quality centre-back last summer.
The former Holland striker has also revealed that Louis van Gaal is “crazy” about Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels and was interested in signing him in the summer.
Widespread report suggest that Manchester United retain the interest in Hummels and would put in a bid for him for next summer.
United signed Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon for £16m, but Gullit feels Van Gaal should have done more to bolster his squad.
Gullit said as quoted by Manchester United Evening News: “The only thing for me that is a surprise is Van Gaal didn’t buy any good central defenders, that had to be his priority.
“He was crazy about Hummels and wanted to buy him. So I would have bought Man United some good defenders because that was the weakest link.
“For me, that they did not was a surprise. Nevertheless, he gets results. The more results he gets, the more confidence they get and the better they will play.”
Hummels has time and again expressed his love for Dortmund, but has recently claimed that he could be looking to move elsewhere and test himself at other leagues.
United have other defensive targets as well, but judging by Gullit’s comments, it seems like the Red Devils could make a formal move for the German defender next summer.
