Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed striker Robin van Persie and defender Luke Shaw are fit to face Cambridge United.
The 20-times English champions will take on League Two outfit in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday night. The former Arsenal star picked up an ankle injury and has not featured since United’s defeat against Southampton.
In addition to this, the England international missed United’s away trip to Loftus Road as they registered a 2 – 0 victory over Queens Park Rangers last weekend. Van Gaal also confirmed the centre-back duo Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling, along with Ashley Young will miss Cambridge tie.
“We have to wait until training but Ashley Young, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans are out for sure. Robin van Persie is available, Luke Shaw is also available,” Van Gaal told MUTV.
There were reports in the media suggesting that January addition Victor Valdes is likely to start ahead of his compatriot David De Gea in the FA Cup clash. However, Van Gaal was frustrated with reports and suggested that he will not give away the details of his team selection for the Red Devils’ upcoming clash.
“I find it unbelievable how the media can write that. I don’t want to say anything about my line-up until just before the game,” the Dutchman stressed.
It is likely that De Gea will be rested for the upcoming clash and the former Barcelona star could get a nod ahead of United’s No 1. With Evans and Smalling out for the upcoming clash, Van Gaal is likely to start with Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones, while Shaw could return to the wing-back position.
