According to Sky Sports, Tottenham have firmed up their interest in Aston Villa winger Ashley Young by tabling an official bid for the former Watford star.
Tottenham have long held an interest in Young, and in the last few days, speculation that Spurs would make a move before the end of the transfer window has intensified. It appears they have done just that, putting in a bid believed to be 16 million pounds.
Tottenham’s successful qualification for the group stage of the Champions League made pre-deadline reinforcements a distinct possibility, especially given their tough group draw, but Saturday’s shock home defeat to previously woeful Wigan served as a harsh reminder that Spurs are not yet the finished product.
It remains to be seen whether Villa owner Randy Lerner will choose to deal the club’s supporters another crushing blow by sanctioning the sale of another star player to cap off what has been a forgettable month for the Villa faithful. Martin O’Neill abruptly resigned as manager earlier in the month, star midfielder James Milner was sold to Manchester City, and in the last week, Villa have suffered two crushing defeats, a 6-0 humiliation at Newcastle, and a second straight heartbreaking Europa League exit at the hands of Rapid Vienna.
Spurs would likely be unable to offer Young a major increase from his current wages, but the chance to leave for a serious top-four contender and a return to London could turn his head.
