Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has cranked up the mind games with Liverpool ahead of his side’s Premier League clash against the Merseysider’s on Sunday by questioning their ability to handle the pressure of a title race.
Sherwood has highlighted that Liverpool’s season could unravel if they fail to cope with the pressure of pushing for the Premier League title. The North London side’s manager will take his team to Anfield on Sunday and believes the result of that match, and the title race, will depend largely on Liverpool’s ability to fend off the jitters that are already creeping into this Liverpool team.
He said: “They’re very, very close – one point off the lead and absolutely flying. They’ve got a strike partnership in Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge that’s the best the Premier League has seen for a very long time, and they’ve given themselves a real chance.”
“Now they have to believe they’ve got something that might fall through their grasp and slip away and – believe me – that’s a real bad feeling to have because perhaps you don’t play with the freedom you’d played with earlier in the season. I know what it’s like myself.
“It all depends on how they can hold their nerve. City and Chelsea have to be favourites because of the players they have who’ve crossed that line and done it previously.
“But Liverpool have gone from seventh last year and must be believing they can actually win this Premier League title.”
Sherwood has won the title at Anfield more recently than any Liverpool player, having captained the Blackburn Rovers side that lifted the trophy there in 1995.
When under the now deposed Andre Villas-Boas, Tottenham were destroyed 5-0 at White Hart Lane in December, and Sherwood will be eager to prove his worth by gaining revenge against Rodgers’ side on Sunday.
