Watch Manchester United’s inexperienced side take on Wolfsburg LIVE on Soccerlens tonight.
Following their crushing defeat of West ham on Saturday, Manchester United’s defensive injury crisis turned from troublesome into farcical. Already decimated by injuries, United lost club captain Gary Neville and utility defender Wes Brown to knocks.
However as we approach the always vital Christmas period, and begin to look forward to a ‘squeaky-bum’ New Year nobody is more aware of the importance of maintaining consistency than Sir Alex. So with the Chelsea machine really beginning to rev up and threaten to accelerate away in the New Year, United simply cannot afford to spring a leak at the back.
As the sirens begin to go off in the heads of United fans up and down the country, as their first team squad becomes filled with pimply teenagers, a time for calmness is clearly needed. As the answer to their problems appears to be right under their noses, amongst the veruy players who have won them three consecutive titles.
Although Red Devils supporters will pine for Vidic, and search the internet for miracle cures for Ferdinand’s mystery injury, the simple fact is EXPERIENCE wins you titles and United have experience in abundance. They have intelligent players all over the park, players with experience of coping when the going gets tough.
The solution to the crisis? Go for experience!!
Darren Fletcher’s appearance a right back on Saturday was a plus, he has the tenacity, work rate and deceptive pace to play there, any no winger in Europe will get past him without a fight.
As for the centre of defence, Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra are the logical choices. Although neither a naturals in the position, Carrick personifies coolness, he will provide balance, experience and passing. Evra, who has become so crucial to United over the last three seasons, offers the necessary pace to drop behind his fellow defenders and track the runs of opposition strikers.
United fans do not fear!! With experienced internationals all over the park, it will be fine. As long as the defence remains unified and composed, the mercurial talents of Rooney, Giggs, Berbatov, Scholes, Valencia and co. will see you safely into 2010!
