Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes joined the Belgian club Standard Liege on loan for the rest of this season during the January window.
The 34-year-old will have been relieved after finally ending his nightmare spell at Old Trafford, but things have not exactly gone according to plan for the Spaniard. Valdes was expected to sign with the Liege permanently at the end of this season, but his poor form has forced the Belgian outfit to consider letting him go.
The former Barcelona keeper has been so poor that his new employers are ready to drop him from the first team.
Valdes was signed by Manchester United as a backup to David De Gea, but the World Cup winner fell out of favour with manager Louis Van Gaal and was banished from the first team.
Apparently the Spaniard refused to train with the U21s to improve his fitness and was then alienated from the rest of the first team on match days as well as training sessions.
Standard Liege expected Valdes to guide them towards the European places with his quality and experience. The Belgians had conceded 36 goals in 22 league games back then and expected the Spaniard to make a difference.
According to recent reports from the Belgian media, Standard are now discussing if they should make the move permanent. They have already paid €500,000 to Manchester United for the 34-year-old keeper and that has not worked out well for them.
The transfer situation involving Standard and Valdes has become complicated now and the player will need to improve soon if he wants to secure a permanent move this summer.
