According to reports from the Independent, Southampton have rejected Liverpool’s £10m bid for right back Nathaniel Clyne. The 24 year old’s contract with the South Coast club is set to expire in the summer and he has also been linked with a move to Manchester United.
The report states that Liverpool fell short in their valuation of the player. We had reported earlier in May that United had in fact bid £18m for the 24 year old who will be in much demand in the summer transfer window.
Glen Johnson’s future with Liverpool is also uncertain as the full back’s contract with the Reds is set to expire in the summer and there have been no talks over a possible extension. Javier Manquillo who is on a two-year loan from Atletico Madrid has also fallen out of favour despite a promising start. Manager Brendan Rodgers has used Emre Can as a right wing back but the German’s future lies in midfield.
Youngster Jon Flanagan missed the whole of this season with a knee injury and and will also miss the start of the coming campaign. This has left Liverpool lacking options at the right-back slot. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool improve their bid for the player who featured in 39 appearances for the Saints this season and is also starting to establish himself in the England national team.
Southampton however would like to see to see a bidding war between Liverpool and United for Clyne, which will see them get the best deal for the full back.
