Manchester United legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson says Louis van Gaal has made a brilliant start to his Old Trafford career.
The Dutchman was appointed as the Red Devils’ manager after sacking Ferguson’s successor, David Moyes leave just 10 months into his six year contract. Since the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager took over, he has made several changes to the squad.
Van Gaal and United spent heavily in bringing several star players to the club. They signed Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao even without European competition.
The Argentine international arrived at Old Trafford on a British record transfer fee of £59.8m from Real Madrid in the final week of the transfer window. Despite a poor start to the league, Ferguson has backed Van Gaal to come good at United.
“Louis van Gaal has made a lot of changes and, thinking about that, actually maybe he’s doing the right thing, to clear the decks and build his own team,” The Telegraph reported Ferguson as saying.
“Because he’s got the experience and coaching ability to do that. The way he’s approached it I think has been brilliant.”
Falcao joined United on a season-long loan from AS Monaco on the deadline day of the transfer window. The Colombian international scored his first goal for the Premier League giants during their 2-1 victory over Everton.
The former Atletico Madrid and FC Porto striker is keen on making his move to United permanent.
“Manchester United were the ones that gambled on me when it was very difficult to do so. It has been a very difficult year, not just in my professional career,” Falcao said.
“What happened at the start of the year (injury) affected me in every way, but it has also helped me grow as a human being, to think about many things, to mature. In terms of my thoughts and plans for the future, I want to stay at Manchester United for the coming years.”
“I’m still going to need some time to be OK, but I am feeling very comfortable and very good on the pitch, in harmony with myself, with the ball and with football,” the Colombian striker concluded.
