Robin Van Persie’s Manchester United career has been on a downward spiral this season, as injuries have forced him to be sidelined for most of the campaign. Despite netting 10 times this season, he has struggled to strike any sort of form in the calendar year 2015, scoring just 2 goals. The Guardian has reported that Louis Van Gaal will consider selling his countryman this summer, whose contract is up at the end of next season.
Van Persie was brought to Old Trafford by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012 from bitter rivals Arsenal. He single-handedly fired United to the title in his first season, scoring 30 goals in all competitions. Since then though, injuries have hampered his progress, and his return of 18 goals last season saw a drop of almost 50 per cent. This season, he has featured even lesser, and Van Gaal has seen a severe striker crisis with Radamel Falcao misfiring as well.
Van Persie though, has stated that he wants to stay at the club and prove himself worthy of an extension. But he knows that things are not in his hands at the moment.
“It is not up to me,” he said. “For the moment I am staying here for 18 months. That is it really. I can’t look into the future. I don’t know what is going to happen after that. We shall have to wait and see.”
United have already confirmed the signing of Memphis Depay, and are also in the market to bring in Edinson Cavani from Paris Saint-Germain. While Falcao is likely to leave, Van Gaal will consider recalling Javier Hernandez from his loan spell at Real Madrid.
This does cast serious doubts of Van Persie’s future at the club. The 31 year-old is still one of the top strikers in the game though and will bring in a decent chunk of money for the club. It may therefore make sense to sell him this summer if the right offer comes along. He is not getting any younger and another injury-plagued season will see his market value fall even further.
