Every body expected that post Sir Alex Ferguson era will be tough for any new Manchester United manager. But, probably no body thought it would be this tough. Not even club legend Paul Scholes.

Scholes is ‘scared’ that Manchester United could face the same fate of Liverpool that took the Reds into the wilderness in the 90’s era, unless new signings are made. And that too quickly.

The summer started off brightly for United, as they completed two quick deals in the form of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw. But, then followed a long period of silence and it took place at a time when their direct rivals have strengthened their squad.

“I am scared for United. Genuinely scared they could go into the wilderness in the same way Liverpool did in the 1990s,” Scholes said in his latest column in the Independent.

“What do they need? Five players. Five proper players who can hit the ground running and turn round a situation that looks desperate. Let me be clear: I am sick of having to criticise the club to which I gave my life as a footballer. But United need to arrest their decline.”

Manchester United have signed Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon yesterday. The Argentine defender, who can play as left back and as a centre back impressed during the World Cup in Brazil, signed a five year deal, though many feel he was not the first choice target of Louis van Gaal.

With only 10 days remaining in the transfer window, time is running out for Ed Woordward to sign few world class players, lest Scholes’ fear may come to haunt United in near future.
