Wayne Rooney has not lost all hope to be included in Manchester United’s potentially season-defining game at Sunderland on Sunday. He is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation and does not accept being refused on playing in such a delimiting match.
Fergie had already said that Rooney could be absent for two or three weeks with a groin strain, but Rooney stands by the fact he is a quick healer, spite having strained the abductor muscle at the top of his leg.
The team’s doctors have given him a probability of playing at Sunderland, almost granting his recovery for the match against Stoke City. He says he is surprised by some of Sir Alex’s public declarations. Is he trying to surprise the fans again by having Rooney on the field sooner than expected?
The last time Fergie said Rooney would be out for this long, he appeared playing at Old Trafford for the Champion’s League return leg against Bayern, and the fact he was only able to play for 55 minutes, kept others worried, mostly at the Football Association, since Rooney is needed at his best for the World Cup.
United are still a point behind, but Chelsea will encounter Liverpool on Sunday, what may seem as a difficult match.
If it were up to Rooney, he would be playing already:
“I’m disappointed to have missed a couple of games over the last few weeks. It’s difficult knowing you can’t influence the game. But if there’s any consolation I’ll probably be fresher for the World Cup, which will be good for me.”
