Liverpool have mixed injury news as Brendan Rodgers confirmed midfielder Joe Allen wil be out of action for few weeks, while striker Daniel Sturridge and defender Jon Flanagan have positive update on their fitness.
The Welsh midfielder picked up an injury during the pre-season friendly fixture as the Reds sealed a 2-1 victory over Swindon Town. Meanwhile, Flanagan and the England international have missed most part of last season due to multiple injuries.
The Northern Irishman confirmed the former Swansea midfielder could be out of action for “two to three weeks,” while Sturridge is set for a return to first team training in September. In addition to this, Flanagan is on line for return at the end of this year.
“He’ll [Allen] probably miss three to four weeks, which is disappointing. He certainly won’t be available for the weekend,” Rodgers told in his pre-match press conference.
“The great news with Jon is that he’s working really well and is on target to come back just before Christmas, which would be great news for the squad,” he added.
“Daniel will hopefully be back towards the beginning of September – he’s working very hard.”
Liverpool will make a trip to the Britannia Stadium as they face Stoke City in the first match of the season. The Reds suffered an embarrassing 6-1 defeat in the final match of the last season.
Since then, the both clubs have made several changes to their squad in the summer transfer window. It should be seen as to how those changes will have an impact when these two teams face each other on Sunday.
