Lille defender Simon Kjaer says that while he is flattered with the reports linking him with a move to Manchester United, he is fully focused on playing for the Ligue 1 side, and wants to ensure they qualify for next season’s Champions League.
The 25-year-old defender has helped Lille to third spot in Ligue 1, currently seven points clear of Saint-Etienne in fourth, and with just five games to play.
Kjaer, who has been capped 37 times for Denmark, moved to the north of France in 2013, following disappointing spells at Wolfsburg and Roma, and there were doubts that he would not live up to his potential, having been named the Danish Talent of the Year back in 2009.
But the defender has gone from strength to strength since his move to the French top flight, and has reportedly attracted interest from European giants such as Manchester United, with Kjaer touted as a possible replacement for the outgoing Nemanja Vidic.
However, the Dane is committed to the Lille cause, and refuses to be swayed by the speculation.
He told BT.dk: “It is of course always flattering to be linked with big clubs but I am not wasting my thoughts on rumours about other clubs.
“I am spending all my efforts and keep my focus entirely on reaching my goal that we will qualify for the Champions League next season.”
United are in line to revamp their backline in the summer, with the likes of Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand likely to follow captain Vidic out of Old Trafford.
