Apart from being a fantastic footballer, first thing that comes to mind while talking about the Daniel Agger is – his loyalty and commitment. He has been at the club since 2006 and earned the role of vice-captain and the status of cult-hero with his passion and consistent performance over the years.
Time and again, he has asserted his love for Liverpool. The 28-year-old has had been linked with several top clubs in the past, but he never wanted to leave Liverpool and likewise the club never wanted to lose him too.
Agger, who was targeted by Barcelona in the summer, said that he is determined and hungry to win silverware with the Reds and intends to out his final two- and-a-half-years of his contract. He explained the reason why he didn’t join the Catalan club. It was simple really – the club didn’t want to sell him and so he remained.
In a recent interview with Danish newspaper Ekstrabladet, Agger said:
“For me [staying at Anfield] it’s also about making the team as strong as possible, because I’m hungry to win something. I believe winning things is possible.
“I’m interested in being part of a squad of 25 strong players, and those who the club bought in during the summer clearly help raise our level.
“[The decision not to sell me to Barcelona] was up to the club. The club would not sell me, and it was so. We can always talk about again later.
“I do not know [if I’ll leave Liverpool]. Right now I have two-and-a-half years left on my contract, and I intend to fulfill my contract. I’m glad at Liverpool and playing well. We have a great team, and if I can win something it will be great. Liverpool is a huge club.”
Agger is known for his brilliant reading of the game, excellent distribution and powerful shots. Along with Steven Gerrard, he is also a terrific leader on the pitch. His experience will prove handy this season as the Reds sitting joint top of the league table are aiming to mount a serious challenge for the top four spot.
