Real Madrid legend and current director of institutional relations Emilio Butragueno has admitted the Champions League winners need to sell their best players in order to accommodate the club sign world class players.
This summer, the Spanish capital club have already signed World Cup star James Rodriguez from AS Monaco and World Cup winning midfielder Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich. The arrival of these two has seen them offload Angel Di Maria.
According to Sky Sports, the Argentine international has arrived at Carrington to complete his British-record £59.3m move to Old Trafford. Butragueno says Real had to offload Di Maria in this ongoing transfer window.
“Real Madrid aim to sign the best players in the world every summer and that means some players have to leave. Having the best player is the best way to fight for titles,” Butragueno told the Spanish publication AS.
“Di Maria is a great player. We are now waiting to conclude a deal. There is not more to add. If there is an agreement it is because all parties are happy.”
This is not the first time the 10-time European champions have allowed their star players leave the Santiago Bernabeu in recent times. Last season, Real were keen on securing a deal for Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur, along with Isco.
Carlo Aneclotti’s side were successful in capturing both Bale and Isco and their arrival forced Mesut Ozil leave Real last summer. The German international joined Arsenal in a club-record £42.5m move on the deadline day.
