Despite evident problems in central defense, Manchester United failed to address the situation in the summer transfer window falling short in their efforts to sign a quality defender. The Red Devils were heavily linked with Sergio Ramos before the player signed a contract extension with Real Madrid.

We had reported yesterday that United have now targeted Ramos’ team mate Raphael Varane next summer. It is believed that manager Louis Van Gaal has earmarked the Frenchman as his top priority signing in 2016.

The Red Devils are all set to come in with a big money offer for Varane who is rightly deemed as one of the best young central defenders across Europe. Varane would definitely be an upgrade for the United defense who have time and again wilted under pressure last season. Those signs haven’t seen to disappear this campaign as well.

The David De Gea transfer fiasco has left a bitter taste among both the clubs involved and it will be interesting to see if the two parties agree to do business. Even if they do, there could be very little food for thought to see Madrid selling Varane with Pepe already in his 30’s and the twilight of his career.

Reports however from French publication Le Journal du Dimanche claim that Varane has revealed that he spoke with Sir Alex Ferguson before joining Madrid in 2011.

The report also states that it was Zinedine Zidane who urged Madrid president Florentino Perez to acquire Varane. The 22 year old is now an integral part of Rafa Benitez’s side having made 119 appearances already for the Spanish giants.
