The ongoing transfer battle between United and Madrid is like a beam balance, where one side there is De Gea, and Sergio Ramos on the other, both are cancelling each other out for their respective clubs to gain an upper hand in the transfer market. Madrid wanted De Gea to be their new Galactico. That opportunity is still there. De Gea has refused to sign a new contract and has privately told the club, via his agent, that he wants to join Madrid this summer.
United are happy to let him go. But only at the right price. The club has given him enough support and platform to grow as a world class goal keeper and now that he has become one of the best in the world, no way can United sell him for cheap. The Old Trafford club are demanding a fee in the region of £20m, which Madrid feel bit excessive for a player who has only a year left on his contract.
According to a report from The Times, De Gea wants to solve his future as early within next week, when United players will join their manager for pre-season training. Spanish media believe that Real Madrid will submit a formal bid very shortly, close to United’s valuation. But the situation has been complicated by United’s willingness to sign Ramos, and Ramos’s desire to join United.
Ramos has made it clear that he will leave Bernabeu and join United this summer. United have already lodged a formal bid in the region of €40m for Ramos, though it is way below Madrid’s valuation. Manchester City have also shown an interest but Ramos is only interested in moving to Old Trafford.
The Spain defender in a meeting with Real Madrid officials, has told the club to listen offers for him. Florentino Perez has tried to convince him to stay put, but with no effect. Till now, neither the player, nor the club have openly stated anything about the possible move.
Ramos has a reported €180m release clause, with still 2 years left to run on his contract. Although such astronomical buy-out clauses hardly mean anything, Madrid still value him around €100, more than twice what United had offered.
To be honest, United will never accept that amount, because it is quite clear that Ramos, 29, does not have any resale value. United were only hoping for Ramos to confirm his desire to leave, which would make things easier for them to gain an upper hand in the transfer.
At this moment, tension is developing between both the club and it has reached a stalemate situation. Two iconic clubs. Two great players. Both want to leave and move to the opposite direction. Both the clubs are unwilling to sell, while any common deal involving both the players has been ruled out. It now seems the transfer window is really getting interesting.
