Manchester United will welcome arch-rivals Liverpool to Old Trafford on Wednesday night in the Capital One Cup tie, where David Moyes would be looking to silence his critics with a victory against a potential big team.
This is an acid test for Moyes. He had a poor record against big teams while at Everton, and the trend hasn’t changed at his new club too. So far United have failed to win against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, losing two in the process.
Further, they are heading into this match on the back of 4-1 humiliating defeat at the hands of City at the Etihad. And to make matter worse, star striker Robin van Persie will miss the tie as well.
Ben Amos could claim a place for the goal keeping slot in place of De Gea. Rafael is fit again and he will take up on the right hand side. Moyes could give Jonny Evans (if he remains fit) a start alongside skipper Vidic while Evra will continue on the left side.
In the midfield, Tom Cleverley will partner Michael Carrick, as Fellaini is already cup-tied. Nani and Kagawa both missed out against City and could get a chance here, while Rooney is expected to retain his place. Javier Hernandez could get a rare chance to lead the line and impress his manager, while Welbeck could be used as sub.
