Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera becomes the first major signing of the season for Manchester United after the player paid his €36m buy-out clause.

The 24-year-old, as reported by Spanish media, has signed a four-year-contract at Manchester United while will earn around €3m-per year.

The highly rated Bilbao midfielder, who was a target of United last summer, successfully completed his medical yesterday in Madrid and flew to England yesterday to complete the deal.

Herrera is a proper central midfielder, who can also play as an attacking midfielder or out wide. He scored five goals last season for Bilbao.

There was a bit of controversy surrounding this deal, and at one stage, it looked like Manchester United have missed out on their target, after Athletic Bilbao officially announced that they have rejected United’s offer.

Bilbao later confirmed that player paid the full buyout clause fee himself, to remove him from his own contract. Basically Manchester United have paid Herrera €36m, the move quite similar to that Javi Martinez’ transfer to Bayern Munich from Bilbao.

Here, we have the first picture of Herrera with the Manchester United shirt presented by Sir Bobby Charlton. Excited Manchester United fans? Share your reactions below.
