Paul Scholes believes that Manchester United should not try to re-sign Paul Pogba in the summer transfer window.
Since leaving Old Trafford The 22-year-old has established himself into one of the finest midfielders in the world. He has won three Serie A titles with Juventus and helped the Turin giants reach the semi-finals of the Champions League this season.
His performances for both club and country are a stark reminder to United fans of what they missed out on, having let the player join the Turin club for nothing more than a small compensation fee in 2012.
United are heavily linked with a move with their former player who would cost at least £60m, but Scholes feels his former club should not go back in for the French midfielder.
“I don’t feel they should go back to sign Pogba for the sums being talked about having lost him for the compensation payment,” he said in his Independent column.
Scholes says the starlet stood out among United’s academy, but he believes his displays didn’t warrant more opportunities in the senior side.
“Paul was in that squad and the truth is that while he obviously had bags of potential, he was not really playing well enough in that period up to Christmas 2011 to warrant a place in the first-team squad on a permanent basis, let alone start games.”
“Although I never spoke to Sir Alex about the details, the understanding in the dressing room was that Paul’s advisers just asked for too much money for his next professional deal.
“They wanted first-team money for a player who was not in the first team at that stage. United felt that was not right and stuck to their principles. He left that summer and very quickly established himself at Juventus, which can happen.”
Chelsea signed their former player Nemanja Matic last season and the Serbian turned out to be one of the key players for the Blues. However, in Pogba’s, Juventus would demand a massive transfer fee (Allegri said Pogba would cost around £75m), which Scholes feels is too much for the French midfielder.
