Newcastle United seem set to lose their skipper Michael Owen this season but have made one last attempt to keep him at St James’ Park.
British tabloid The Sun has reported that Mike Ashley has offered Owen a new contract worth £80,000 per week. Although the amount might appear quite a lot to many, it is actually £25,000 less than what Owen currently receives from the Geordies.
There’s a good chance that Owen might reject this in the hopes of getting a better offer from another club which he could join for free next summer. Newcastle are already struggling (although the win at Fratton Park has done wonders for their confidence) and Owen is still their best bet for goals and therefore progress up the league table.
If Owen rejects the contract, Newcastle would then be forced to pawn him off in January or stand to lose on whatever transfer fee he could generate (not to mention pay his wages for another 5 months).
