Dutch winger Memphis Depay says the private conversation he had held with Louis van Gaal was the major deciding factor why he chose Manchester United over other interested clubs.
The 21-year-old will join United in the summer, pending a medical after a fee has been agreed between PSV and Manchester United, which as per BBC is around £30m.
The PSV star reveals that although he was close to joining PSG but Manchester United were always interested in him. The winger says he supported United since he was 11-year-old. In an interview with NU Sport, he says:
“When I was eleven years old I had already told myself that I had to play for United. It’s a beautiful club and the English league is beautiful. I am proud of my transition.”
Depay adds that Van Gaal is a world class manager and that United is a great club. The Dutch international, who has 15 international appearances till date, is confident that he can be a great player for the club.
He becomes the 10th Dutch player to have joined/played for United and fourth PSV Eindhoven player to represent the club. His predecessors – Ruud van Nistelrooy, Jap Stam, and Park Ji Sung have had left great impressions at the club, even earning legendary and cult status. United fans will be hoping their new signing will emulate the other Dutch legends that have played for this iconic club.
The Dutch winger was excellent again this weekend in the Eredivise. He scored a stunning free-kick against Heracles to take his goal tally to 22 this season.
