One of the major reasons behind Liverpool’s dramatic decline in the goal tally this season is the prolonged absence of Daniel Sturridge through injuries. Last season Liverpool had set a record of scoring over 100 goals in the Premier League, this time they have managed only 47 goals so far.
The England international has appeared in only 18 matches all season and he is all set to miss the rest of the campaign with a hip injury.
Reports from The Guardian suggest that Sturridge has visited a surgeon in Boston to assess whether an operation is required.
The Liverpool striker has not featured for Brendan Rodgers’ side since suffering the injury at Blackburn Rovers on 8th April and he may require minor surgery to recover fully.
Earlier in the season, he spent time with the medical staff of the Boston Red Sox, who share owners with Liverpool in FSG, to cure his thigh and calf problems that ruled him out of action for nearly five months.
Rodgers recently admitted that he is unsure whether the 25-year-old striker will play for Liverpool again this season as a result of the hip injury. Surgery is the best possible solution here which may ensure the striker is fit for the start of pre-season training.
The Reds manager has urged the club owners to spend money on world class players and he stated that he wants to sign a proven goalscorer able to perform “at the top level every week”.
The Guardian claims PSV Eindhoven’s Memphis Depay, leading top scorer of the Eredivise with 21 goals (although he mainly operates from the wing), is a prime target for the Liverpool manager. The Reds, however, are expected to face a strong challenge from Manchester United and other European heavyweights over his signature.
