Memphis Depay has admitted that he is struggling to adjust to the physical demands of the Premier League.
The 21-year-old joined Manchester United from PSV Eindhoven in the recently concluded transfer window, becoming the first new arrival of the summer. Last season, he was the star player for the Dutch outfit.
Depay played a crucial role in helping PSV win the Dutch league from the clutches of Ajax after four seasons. He was the top scorer in the domestic competition as his contribution was instrumental in his former side’s success.
However, the Dutch international has failed to replicate his form at United. Depay claims the number of rest days in England are way too less when compared at PSV. He has suggested that to be the reason for his poor form so far this season.
“There are a lot of games in Manchester. There are very few rest days and on training days you are mainly concerned with recovering. It’s heavy, two games a week, always at a high level, and my body has to get used to that,” Depay told Dutch publication De Telegraaf.
Depay is not the first player to have struggled with the top flight English league’s physical demands. The Premier League’s record signing Angel Di Maria struggled to adapt at Manchester United and left the club to join Paris Saint-Germain after a year.
The young forward has refused to follow the footsteps of the Argentine international. Depay remains confident that he will bounce back from his poor form and show his worth at United in the future.
“I try in my career to take as many steps. There I am still in the middle. I think this is the right step was and am happy in Manchester,” the Dutch international said.
“And that’s why I always try to enjoy, both in training and during matches. I think it is important that I keep fun in the game that I play. What I’ve always left everything.
“Of course, I continue to make my actions and take the initiative. Although that is not always convenient. A ball can sometimes be quite useful wide. I am also in that respect still developing. With one objective.”
United fans will be hoping that Depay could hit top form and emulate what he did at PSV soon at Old Trafford.
