According to reports in Italy and England, Matteo Darmian is edging closer to Manchester United.

The Torino full back is set to sign for the Red Devils a deal worth around 12.5 million pounds.

Louis Van Gaal has been monitoring a number of full backs over the last few weeks, including the likes of Alves, Clyne, Van Der Weil and has now decided to go for the Italian international.

Darmian is one of the most complete full backs in Serie A and has been linked with moves to Bayern in the past.

Here are three reasons why he can be an outstanding Premier League full back –

Versatility

Darmian is an extremely versatile full back who can play in a number of roles. He can operate as a traditional right back or left back in a four defender formation.

Should Van Gaal decide to play with three at the back, Darmian can effortlessly fit in as a wing back as well, providing width as well as defensive cover to the centre backs from wide areas.

Judging by the number of injuries at United, Darmian’s versatility will be priceless.

Ball playing defender

Like Ivanovic, Azpilicueta and Zabaleta, Darmian is very good on the ball. Apart from his pace and directness, Darmian is good at linking up with forward/wide players and can play with the ball.

Darmian started out as a centre back and is used to playing out from the back.

Van Gaal prefers defenders who can play on the ground and Darmian will suit his philosophy to a tee.

Defensive ability

Above all, a defender is always rated on his defensive abilities and Darmian has no downside to his game.

The Italian is quick, strong, has a great engine and is an exceptional tackler.

Darmian finished the 2013 season with the average of most tackles per game in all of Europe. Furthermore, his incredible engine allows him to bomb up and down he pitch throughout the game providing an extra option for his teammates in attack and defence.

Still only 25, Darmian is yet to reach his peak and will keep getting better under the tutelage of Louis Van Gaal. If he can bulk up a bit, Darmian will be an asset for Manchester United in the years to come.
