According to reports from French Media Outlet Le 10 Sport, Brazilian defender Marquinhos is set to sign a contract extension with Paris St Germain. the young defender who joined the reigning French Champions from Italian Roma for £27m last term had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in the January transfer window.
It was believed that the Red Devils had offered €45m (reported in the story) for the services of the 20 year old but the deal failed to go through as PSG denied selling the player.
Marquinhos had earlier made 21 league appearances last season for the Parisian side but his game time has been drastically reduced thanks to the arrival of David Luiz from Chelsea in the summer. Moreover, the presence of Thiago Silva in the heart of the defense sees Marquinhos as third choice centre-back at the club.
Marquinhos’ agent Giuliano Bertolucci had also claimed that his client has attracted interest from United. Speaking to RMC, he had said, “Last summer the president of PSG [Nasser Al-Khelaifi] stated that Marquinhos was unsellable; we will see what he thinks next June. So many [clubs] want him, including Manchester United. What is certain is that Marquinhos wants to become the best defender in the world.”
“He is still not at the level of Thiago Silva and David Luiz, so for this reason he respects the choices of the coach. But he doesn’t want to spend much more time on the bench. If necessary, he can play also as a full-back or a wide midfielder.”
The recent developments will come as a blow to Manchester United as they will have to now look elsewhere to sign a defender of the same potential as Marquinhos.
