Manchester United want Jose Mourinho to build a strong legacy at the club and establish a dynasty like Sir Alex Ferguson.
Mourinho signed a three-year-contract with the Old Trafford club, but United want him to prolong his stay beyond his initial contract.
Sir Alex Ferguson managed United between November 1986 and May 2013, but his successors couldn’t even last long within their given contracts.
David Moyes lasted only 34 matches, while Louis van Gaal failed to complete his three-year tenure at the club.
But the intention from United was very clear from the beginning. The club handed Moyes a six-year-contract which shows they were willing to give their manager sufficient time to create a legacy as long as minimum expectations are met.
United seem to have a long-term plans for Mourinho and they believe the Portuguese can fulfil them.
The only problem is Mourinho doesn’t have a proven track record that suits their plans. In his 16 years of management career, he hasn’t managed to continue at a club for more than three years.
In his first tenure at Chelsea, he completed three full terms before being sacked in September 2007. In his second spell at the Bridge, he lasted for two and a half years only.
Likewise, at Real Madrid, he completed full three seasons, while at Porto and Inter Milan, between 2002-04 and 2008-10 respectively, he departed after two seasons.
In his long managerial career, he has won league titles with every club he has managed and has won two Champions League as well. At 53, he feels the time is right for him to settle down at a club and create a legacy, akin to Ferguson at United and Wenger at Arsenal.
In fact, he re-joined Chelsea for the second time with that particular aim in mind. At the time of his unveiling, he said that he would like to stay for nearly a decade at Stamford Bridge.
“I would like [to stay for], say, 12 years,” he said then. “The best way to [run a club] is to do it with stability. For the players, if you want to help them grow up, you do that much better with stability: in ideas, philosophy, model of play, style of leadership.
“This all comes from stability at the highest level: with the owners and board and, after that, the manager, the second line of the hierarchy. That stability is very important. You look, for example, to Manchester United and everybody feels David [Moyes] will have his time to do his work in a calm way. I think that’s fantastic.”
United owners want him to create a dynasty at Old Trafford. The Portuguese has long coveted for this job and he is more determined to show he can be successful at United.
