Manchester United vs Liverpool is not a ‘derby’ in its purest form. But still, it is the most anticipated fixture of any season for any Premier League fans. The two most successful sides in English football, and the rich history, vitriol, passion, associated with it – the stage is all set for yet another cracker on Saturday.
Unlike other popular football derbies, this particular fixture has its own unique feature. Unlike other popular rivalries like say Boca vs River Plate, Real Madrid vs Barcelona or even Old Firm derby, where both sets of fans live and die with the fixture, here the scenario is slightly different, as the outcome of the fixture hardly leave any impact on the title race. It has been the case throughout the history of both the clubs, which makes it a fascinating study for football researchers.
Indeed it is a strange scenario that neither of the clubs had really challenged one another during their time of dominance, and that’s why here the power of balance has shifted after decades and even longer. For instance, United dominated the 60’s era, while Liverpool had ruled the English league for 70’s and 80’s. Then came a period where Manchester United rose to the power under Sir Alex Ferguson (knocking Liverpool “off their F***ing perch”) and dominated the 90’s and the modern era.
It remains to be seen how the post Ferguson era pans out for United and what impact it leave on the rivalry, as Liverpool will be looking to reclaim their old glory.
Both the sides have had a decent start to the season. Both teams have picked up 7 points from their opening four games, and are coming into this match on the back of shock defeats. United lost 2-1 to Swansea City before the International break, while Liverpool were humiliated 3-0 at home by West Ham.

Spain goal keeper David de Gea is all set to feature for the first time this season for the Red Devils. New signing Anthony Martial could be handed a debut, although the teenager may only appear from the bench.
Liverpool Team News
The loss of Philippe Coutinho through suspension is a massive blow for Liverpool. Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana were absent in training which means Lucas Leiva will continue in the midfield.
Likewise, Daniel Sturridge has returned to training, but it looks unlikely he will feature. Danny Ings could replace Coutinho.
