Manchester United’s mega transfer plans: Laporte, Hummels, Clyne, Cavani

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal spent over £150 million on new players last summer, and irrespective of where they finish this season (read as outside top four), the Dutchman will be given another transfer war chest to bring in quality players.

Well connected within the club Mark Ogden writes that Van Gaal has prioritised right-back, centre-half, central midfield and centre-forward for the upcoming transfer window. The prospect of signing a new goal keeper cannot be ruled out should David de Gea refuse to sign a new contract and hence move elsewhere.

In defence, Manchester United will try to lure French centre-half Aymeric Laporte. The 20-year-old has been the pillar of strength at the back for Athletic Bilbao and has been repeatedly monitored by United.

Mats Hummels is another defender who is expected to arrive at Old Trafford next summer. It remains to be seen whether Dortmund sell their prized asset or not, if they qualify for the Champions League.

England full back Nathaniel Clyne has progressed immensely in the past 18 months and has emerged as a possible target as well.

In the midfield, Kevin Strootman still remains the first choice, but given his injury concerns it remains to seen whether United at all show any further interest.

Veteran midfielder Michael Carrick will be offered a new contract while rejuvenated Ashley Young is likely to stay put.

Radamel Falcao will be sent back to Monaco and United won’t sign him permanently at the cost of £43.2m. Robin van Persie will be allowed to see his contract at the club despite being in poor form season. In that situation, United may sign a striker and have set their sight on Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani.

The likes of Javier Hernandez, Rafael, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling are all facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford.
