José Mourinho spent around £150 million during the summer transfer window, but United have shown no real signs of improvement so far. Manchester United are struggling to make it to the top four, let alone sustain a title challenge.
According to Daily Mirror, Mourinho believes that his side are in need of two top-class defenders in order to finish in the top four, and to push for the Premier League title. Apparently, Mourinho is unhappy with the mental toughness of Smalling and Shaw. The likes of Darmian, Rojo, Jones and Blind have not impressed him too much either. Although new signing, Eric Bailly, has been a revelation under the Portuguese tactician, he is currently injured and will go away for AFCON soon.
Mirror are reporting that Mourinho is eyeing up moves for Virgil Van Dijk and David Alaba. The Southampton defender is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League right now, and he would improve every team in the country. As for Alaba, the Bayern star is a world-class player and can play multiple positions.
The report adds that Mourinho has asked Woodward to back him financially during the January transfer window so he can land these two players. His alternative is Leverkusen defender, Aleksandar Dragović.
Both Alaba and Van Dijk are crucial players for Bayern and Southampton. Furthermore, Van Dijk is a target for Liverpool as well. Mourinho might need to shell out a ridiculous sum of money if he wants to sign these two stars in January. As per the report, Alaba is valued at £40 million, and Van Dijk is valued at £30 million.
Furthermore, they will also need to convince the likes of Alaba to join them, as United is a massive step down from Bayern Munich.
