The 21 year-old was part of the Dutch side that finished 3rd at the FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil last year, and scored two goals. Van Gaal, who managedthe Oranje before signing with United, didn’t talk about this interest too openly with the media when asked recently. But, having said that, it is no secret that he is a big fan of Depay.
The winger becomes the first signing for next season as Van Gaal and United look to challenge for the title. This season, they are very close to securing a return to the Champions League after missing out last year, but finishing 4th is hardly something the Red Devils will be proud of. They will want to get among the big time as soon as possible, and signing such a promising young talent is certainly a step in the right direction.
There were also reports that Liverpool were looking to challenge United in a bid to sign Depay, and it was even suggested as recently as yesterday that they were favourites to land him.
Depay has scored 27 goals in all competitions this season, and after the signing of Angel Di Maria hasn’t gone according to plan for Van Gaal, he will look to make an impact at Old Trafford. His direct style of play and sound crossing ability make him a perfect fit as a United player. He is also known for cutting inside onto his right and unleashing some venomous strikes.
This is an early victory for United in the transfer market, as they have missed on many of their high-profile targets in the last two years. They will want this change in fortunes to continue on the pitch next season.
