Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes has claimed that David De Gea is out of order if he has lost his focus and has refused to play for Manchester United.
David De Gea is linked with a move to Real Madrid and according to manager Louis Van Gaal, the Spaniard is not the same player as last season. The Dutchman claimed earlier in the window that De Gea has lost his focus and has asked to be left out of the United first team.
Speaking to BT, Paul Scholes claimed that the club are paying him a lot of money and as a professional it is his duty to stay focused and perform for the club.
‘How can you lose focus?’ Scholes claimed. ‘That’s the thing for me. He is getting paid by this club, it is a brilliant club.
‘They paid a lot of money on a young keeper to give him this chance. If the manager is right and says he has lost focus then yeah, I think he is out of order.
‘He should be in that team playing. If it wasn’t for him last year, they probably wouldn’t be in this position tonight so they have to thank him for that.’
De Gea is thought to be frustrated at Manchester United and is keen to secure an exit this summer. The player’s agent is working towards a transfer and all parties are confident that an agreement could be reached soon.
Real Madrid are unwilling to match United’s demands, but there is a growing belief that a compromise will be reached.
Further, Rio Ferdinand stated that United need to hold on to De Gea as an example. The former United defender claimed that if De Gea is allowed to force a move, it will set a bad example for players in the future, who will believe that they can force a move out of Manchester United.
‘I think it sets the tone,’ Ferdinand said. ‘I think it tells players you can get out of this club easy. No you can’t. If we want you stay and you are one of our better players then you will stay here and play under our conditions. That sets the tone.
‘It is disappointing to see it get to this stage. It has become a bit tit-for-tat, there is a lot going on behind the scenes we can’t explain because we don’t know, but you’ve got to play him.
However, Ferdinand claimed that De Gea is an ultimate professional and has never stepped out of his line in the past.
‘Knowing David like we do, he has been a solid professional for the whole time he has been at Manchester United.
‘He has never stepped out of line and I’d be surprised if he has done that. But the manger says so, so we have to abide by that.’
