Reports from Italy suggest that Manchester United are plotting a whopping €40m transfer swoop for Roma’s Kevin Strootman in the coming transfer market. Italian daily Il Tempo has revealed that the Red Devils want the Dutch midfielder with Louis Van Gaal set to take charge at Old Trafford in the summer.

Strootman suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury earlier this year which meant that his World Cup hopes would be dashed but the 24 year old has undergone a successful surgery and hopes to be fit for the start of next season.

United are ready to offer €37m to Roma for Strootman’s services with potential add ons, that could make the deal rise to €40m, which would be double of what the Giallorossi paid to PSV for the player last summer.

Its not a surprise that United want an anchorman in the middle who would dictate the tempo of the game and also would be able to pick out defense splitting passes from the middle of the park. Strootman had a superb start to his Roma career scoring 5 goals and grabbing 6 assists in 25 appearances before being sidelined.

Roma have already managed to tie down Miralem Pjanic to a four year contract extension and would be unwilling to let Strootman leave even for a lucrative sum as Rudi Garcia’s side will look for a title push in the next season. There have been reports that the Wolves have courted Sami Khedira of Real Madrid, if Strootman leaves for the greener pastures of Old Trafford.

Moreover Garcia faces a major headache as new Premier League champions Manchester City are pushing for a €30m bid for defender Mehdi Benatia.
