Louis van Gaal has dropped a major hint that Manchester United could sign Real Madrid star Angel di Maria this summer.
The Argentine international is believed to be surplus to requirements at the Spanish capital club. The Champions League winners are looking to offload the winger and he has been attracting interest from both United and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Di Maria is linked with a €80m move to Old Trafford in recent times. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager admitted that United lack wingers, especially a player of Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo’s calibre.
“It is a strategy of Manchester United to do that. At this moment, we have five No.9s and four No.10s – and we don’t have wingers to give us attacking width,” Sky Sports reported Van Gaal as saying.
“Or, I should say, we don’t have wingers of the highest level, like Ronaldo or Di Maria or somebody like that. So, I have to play in another way – and you have seen that already. I only buy when I think we need to buy – in the position that is necessary,” United manager added.
Van Gaal’s comments will come as an encouragement to the Red Devils’ faithful, who are hoping for a turnaround during the upcoming campaign after a poor season under former United manager David Moyes.
PSG are also believed to have ended their interest in signing Di Maria after finding out that the South American winger is expensive.
“We spoke to Real about Di Maria but he was too expensive,” PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said as quoted in the Guardian.
