Steven Gerrard received an overwhelming send off yesterday, as the Liverpool captain walked out on the Anfield turf one last time with the Reds.
The former England captain is all set to begin a new adventure with LA Galaxy this summer and has revealed that David Beckham advised him to join the MLS.
Gerrard said Beckham told him: “I’ve been following your career, I have played with you and I think it is absolutely perfect for you and your family.”
He added: “To hear those lines from someone like him who I know would give me the right advice,
“Who has been there and experienced it, at a younger age than me, was great.”
Gerrard added: “I spoke to him about the level of the league, what it’s like for the family, the lifestyle.
“It was about October, round about the same time I had the chat with Brendan [Rodgers] so the timing was perfect.
Further, Steven Gerrard also stated that he has been following his new club already and will be watching Liverpool next season even if it was in the early hours of morning.
“Will I be getting up at 5am to watch Liverpool? I’m already up late now to watch LA Galaxy!”, he said to the Liverpool Echo.
Liverpool’s season has been plagued with the absence of character and inspiration. The fragility in the squad was evident as the Reds slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home against Crystal Palace yesterday.
Steven Gerrard’s departure leaves a gaping hole in the squad, not just in terms of a player with tremendous ability, but also in terms of a role model and someone to look up to, when the chips are down.
Brendan Rodgers’ task of replacing the talisman will be harder, considering the Reds cannot offer Champions league football or big wages to top players.
Steven Gerrard highlighted in his interview yesterday that the club desperately need to sign proven players as opposed to young players with potential.
How Fenway Sports Group and Brendan Rodgers go about their task of replacing Gerrard remains to be seen, but their track record in the market point towards another disappointing summer for Liverpool fans.
