Manchester United manager David Moyes has been sacked after a disastrous first season at Old Trafford, the club confirmed this morning.
Moyes signed a six-year contract with the Barclays Premier League champions last summer, but according to The Times, the Glazer family, United’s owners, finally lost patience with the Scot after yet another poor, listless display in the 2-0 defeat to Everton.
We take a look at five candidates who could replace Moyes at Old Trafford.
Ryan Giggs
Going by the media reports, the Welshman would take charge of the club for the rest of the season on an interim basis, however the club legend could be appointed on a permanent basis as well.
Giggs has won 26 major honours as a player with Manchester United but has no previous managerial experience. Can United afford to take a further gamble?
Jurgen Klopp
The 46-year-old was instrumental in turning the fortunes of Borussia Dortmund at a time when the club was going through their darkest period in history.
Not only he kept the club afloat in the league but went on to make them a force in Germany and Europe, winning Bundesliga titles and taking the club to Champions League final last season.
Louis van Gaal
The Dutchman is at 8/1 to become the next manager of United. He has managed top European clubs like Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich in his career and has won one Champions League and one Uefa Cup with Ajax. Further, he has earned great success in Spain and in Germany as well.
Diego Simeone
If Atletico Madrid win the La Liga or the Champions League or both, he will be considered as the best manager of the season in Europe.
Without enough funds (no comparison when it comes to big boys in Spain) the way his side is on the verge of breaking the duopoly in La Liga is commendable.
Roberto Martinez
Martinez has done really well in his first season at Everton. Though the Toffees might miss out on the Champions League qualification but Martinez has received heavy praise for his brand of eye-catching football at Goodison Park.
He is young, progressive, tactically smart and has the ability to motivate the players. Should be an ideal candidate if Manchester United want to put trust on a young manager like what Liverpool did with Brendan Rodgers.
