Manchester United fans can expect further good news, following the capture of Juan Mata from Chelsea for a club-record transfer fee, as star striker Wayne Rooney is expected to sign a bumper new contract and commit his long term future to Old Trafford.
According to The Times, Rooney could be given a club-record salary which could be close to £15 million a year and United sources are very confident that the England striker will sign the new deal imminently.
Mark Ogden of The Telegraph also reported that negotiations between United and Rooney have taken place this month over a new contract. Rooney wanted to leave the club following a breakdown of his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson, while the striker is expected to be courted by European heavy weights in the summer like Chelsea and Real Madrid.
United’s vice chairman, Ed Woodward has been working to persuade Rooney and Paul Stretford, the player’s agent, to end the uncertainty over the player’s future.
New manager David Moyes has tried his best to build a team around Rooney, while the 28-year-old’s brilliant form has been one of the bright features for United so far. It will represent a remarkable twist to Rooney’s playing career at Old Trafford should he sign a new deal as twice he has seemed to be on the brink of leaving the club.
