Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will have a scan on his knee today, manager Louis Van Gaal has confirmed.

The England striker was expected to feature against Stoke City in the English Premier League yesterday but didn’t make the matchday squad.

Rooney collided with the advertising hoardings at Old Trafford towards the end of the 3-0 win over Hull City at the weekend.

“Wayne will have a scan,” Van Gaal said. “It is the knee and I don’t think it is so heavy [serious].

“But with a knee you never know, so we will have the scan and then we will know more.”

Van Gaal also provided updates on the fitness of Angel Di Maria and Daley Blind, who are both currently injured.

The Dutch manager said Blind might be back at Christmas from a knee injury while Di Maria is an outside chance to make an early return to action.

“Blind not so bad, maybe Christmas, maybe three weeks,” Van Gaal said. “Di Maria is also not so heavy. I don’t think he will play at Southampton, but you never know.

“We’ve got more players coming back and we can see a little more light in the tunnel.”

United picked up their fourth straight league win after beating Stoke 2-1 and currently sit in fourth place on the table.
