Manchester United have handed Everton a written epistle, expressing their contrite apology over the way they hired their new and former Everton manager David Moyes.
According to exclusive report from The Daily Mirror, Manchester United officials have said sorry in an attempt to diffuse the tension between the two clubs that threatened to reach a Premier League tribunal in the form of full-scale official complaint.
It is understood that United board members approached Moyes long before the official announcement of his appointment, which has left the Goodison Park officials furious at the way they were treated by the Premier League Champions.
Everton, deeply hurt, by such treatment have been quick to shut all the doors of any negotiations regarding United’s move for defender Leighton Baines.
The Red Devils are looking to replace Patrice Evra with England international Leighton Baines and Moyes was keen to raid his old club with a £12 million offer, which quite naturally was rebuffed.
With two weeks remaining before the start of the new season and no major signings yet, United are looking to improve their offer to lure Baines before the transfer window closes. But, such is the situation between the two clubs that United can simply forget about landing the left-back, unless they fork out an extraordinary offer that forces the Merseysiders to sanction the deal.
On that perspective, is the letter meant to soothe the resentment a little bit? Is it a ploy to wet the ground before making an inroad with a lucrative bid for Baines? Well, the conscience might have tickled the moral skins of the fellow officials; it’s baffling how it took them so long to say sorry.
United are also targeting Marouane Fellaini from Everton to bolster their midfield this summer. At least, the Red Devils won’t face outright rejection in this case, as all they need is to activate his release clause, which has not yet expired.
