Manchester City suffered yet another setback yesterday as key players Edin Dzeko and Vincent Kompany picked up injuries during the 1-0 win away to Leicester.
Manchester City came away with a 1-0 win away to Leicester City yesterday. The visitors grabbed a crucial victory thanks to a Frank Lampard strike on the 40th minute.
Despite the win, Pellegrini and the Citizens will have come away with a bitter taste in their mouth, because of injuries to Edin Dzeko and captain, Vincent Kompany.
Bosnia international, Dzeko was set to start the game before he sustained a calf problem during the warm up sessions. Meanwhile, Kompany picked up an hamstring strain late in the game. The Manchester City captain has suffered from recurring hamstring problems over the last few years and is set to face a spell on the sidelines again this season.
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed that the full extent of the injuries are yet to be discovered, but it looks like both players will be out for more than just a couple of weeks.
“It’s difficult to know what happened with both Vincent and Edin,” said Pellegrini.
“Vincent has the same problem he had with his hamstring a few weeks ago. That was one of the reasons he did not play on Wednesday against Roma. Edin has a muscle injury in his calf so maybe both will be more than a couple of weeks.”
The champions have already been plagued with injuries to key players. The likes of Sergio Aguero, Jovetic have been sidelined earlier this month and with Dzeko added to that list yesterday, Pellegrini might need to dip into the January transfer market as the side looks desperately short of forwards at the moment.
Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea continued their impressive start to the season with a win against Hull and maintained their three point gap at the top of the table.
While the title race continues to look like a two horse race, the increasing number of injuries, especially to key players, does not look good for the Champions.
