Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed Vincent Kompany will be out on the sidelines for at least a month after the centre-back picked up a calf injury during his side’s goalless draw against Dynamo Kiev.
The Premier League club progressed to the quarter final of the Europe’s club competition, but have lost their captain due to injury. City face Manchester United at the Etihad in the Premier League clash later this weekend.
Pellegrini confirmed the Belgium international will undergo scans to find out the extend of the injury. His absence will be a massive blow for City as Kompany recently returned to the starting lineup from the sidelines.
“Vincent has a muscle injury in his calf, same as he had before. Always with muscle injuries it is a minimum of a month. It is difficult to say if he is out for the season but we are in the middle of March and then it is the middle of April,” City manager said.
“Having this problem in his calf and it being the middle of March, at least three-quarters of the rest of the season he will not play.
“I think he must be very strong with his mentality. It is very difficult to accept it, but there is nothing he can do. So we must see tomorrow with the examinations.”
Kompany is not the only player to be injured in the midweek Champions League clash. Nicolas Otamendi, the centre-back’s partner also picked up an injury and was replaced early in the game.
With Kompany out of the weekend derby clash and the Argentine international doubtful to face Louis van Gaal’s side. The star duo’s absence will force the former Real Madrid manager to start with Eliaquim Mangala and Martín Demichelis in the heart of the back four against the Red Devils on Sunday.
