Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is interested in signing the Marseille midfielder Lassana Diarra during the January transfer window.
Diarra has played in the Premier League with Arsenal and Chelsea before and the French defensive midfielder will know exactly what is needed of him if United can agree on a deal to sign him. The 31-year-old has played for Real Madrid when Jose Mourinho was managing Los Blancos and therefore the duo will be well aware of each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
The 31-year-old midfielder joined Marseille as a free agent in the summer of 2015 and has been a key player for them since then. Mourinho is looking to shore up his midfield options as the Red Devils aim to break into the top four and qualify for the Champions League.
Foot Mercato are reporting that Mourinho is not keen on keeping Morgan Schneiderlin at the club and will look to propose a swap deal involving the former Southampton star in order to land Diarra.
Manchester United are lacking depth in the central midfield with Herrera, Carrick and Pogba as their main options. Mourinho clearly doesn’t trust Schneiderlin or Fellaini and therefore signing Diarra could be beneficial to them.
Diarra has two-and-a-half years left to run on his contract at the Stade Velodrome and it will be interesting to see if Marseille decide to part ways midway through the season.
