Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick, who is close to signing a new contract with the club, is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after undergoing a procedure to resolve his persistent Achilles injury.
The 32-year-old’s current deal expires next summer and is hopeful of signing a two-year contract at the club. The former Hotspur player, who has been at the club for seven years, has been one of the consistent performers for the Red Devils, but is now facing a lengthy time out at the sidelines.
As per reports from The Telegraph, the midfielder who has been withdrawn from the England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Chile and Germany could be out till Christmas.
He was given an injection on Tuesday to reduce the inflammation that has troubled the player in recent weeks. The club was hopeful that he would recover within 10 days time but it has been confirmed that he would be sidelined for a month or could be as long as six weeks.
The absence of Carrick will be seen as major blow as David Moyes will certainly be without his best and consistent midfielder during this period. He will have to rely on veteran Ryan Giggs, Tom Cleverley and Anderson – the later duo haven’t impressed enough this season.
New summer signing, Marouane Fellaini, has yet to impress too, with Moyes admitted that the Belgian has struggled for form and fitness. Phil Jones, who was brilliant against Arsenal, could be another possible option for the United manager while Darren Fletcher won’t be rushed back from his stomach surgery.
Meanwhile, Robin van Persie has been withdrawn from Holland’s friendlies against Japan and Colombia for groin and toe problems and will undergo a treatment in Manchester.
