Approaching the summer transfer window, where rumours appear more than stars in the sky, an interesting and unexpected one has emerged concerning Chelsea skipper John Terry. According to the Daily Mail, Man City are scheming a cheeky little move to pinch a highly experienced individual from under the noses of one of their closest rivals.
John Terry, nearing the end of his career at 33, has been a regular in the Chelsea team this season and has formed a formidable partnership with fellow Englishman Gary Cahill. Considering his age, it is testament to the character and ability of the defender that he has made 44 appearances this season. The second coming of the “special one” seems to have rejuvenated the Chelsea captain and he has produced some terrific displays, helping contribute to Chelsea’s fantastic defensive record throughout 2013/14.
His contract runs out at the end of the season and reports have suggested he has been offered a new one year deal. However, this deal is said to have come at a price, that being a massive pay cut. Currently on a 150,000 a week, with financial fair play apparently looming on the horizon, it is no wonder the Chelsea hierarchy plan to cut the wages of a player who is nearing the end of his career and may not be such a vital cog in their plans going forward. This may prompt Terry to look elsewhere, cashing in like many other players have done when approaching the end of their careers.
So step forth Manchester City. A club who are more than likely to pay Terry this 150,000, or perhaps make it even more. With Demichelis, City have a defender that is perhaps not the quality they have come used to in recent years, and is a player who is constantly deemed the weak link of their side. Thus defence is an area City will be very keen to improve, and a partnership of Terry and Kompany would be a very interesting partnership indeed. Both players have been exceptional this season, pairing them both together could give the Manchester club a little edge in the title race next season. If they can manage to lure Terry on a free it will be a very sly coup indeed, his experience would come as a welcome addition to their squad and would certainly make them a lot more solid at the back.
At Chelsea Terry is an absolute legend and it wouldn’t go down well if he went to City. Money does talk though, as everyone knows, and perhaps he fancies a different challenge and change of scenery. However, his body language has suggested nothing of the sort as he has been totally committed to Chelsea this season. The core of Chelsea will change next season though, Cole looks certain to leave, Lampard has been close to going before, and now Terry could be on the way. Chelsea fans will understand this but may be slightly concerned if they lose all three at once. Nonetheless Mourihno won’t hold back when rebuilding his side, he has demonstrated that already this season when ruthlessly moving out Mata.
