Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has joined the elite list of great United players who have reached the milestone of scoring 200 goals for this iconic club. The maverick has become the fourth player of United to achieve that feat, after netting a brace against Bayer Leverkusen during the Champions League group stage tie on Tuesday night.

Rooney is currently fourth in the list, behind Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and Jack Rowley and needs 50 more goals to become the all-time leading goal scorer for United. Also, it took him to second in United’s Champions League scorer chart, past Ryan Giggs and is eight short of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record tally.

The achievement looks all the more colourful considering the fact that Rooney could have left the club in the summer. The England international has had bids rejected from Chelsea; while he himself had expressed desire to leave.

His relationship with previous manager Sir Alex Ferguson went beyond repairs while he was angry and confused with David Moyes’ comments that he would play mainly as second fiddle to Dutchman Robin van Persie. Rooney has responded brilliantly to all such criticisms by scoring 3 goals in 2 back-to-back matches already.

But, it seems he is far from being happy again. He reacted indignantly when asked if he was happy again. He said as quoted in The Guardian:

“Listen, I’m concentrating on my football, as I’ve done all summer. I got my head down and worked hard to get myself fit and ready for the season. I’m delighted with the way I’ve come back, delighted that I’m back playing and scoring goals.”

Moyes

David Moyes, the Manchester United manager expressed his happiness with this important win. Speaking to MUTV, he said:

“We were really pleased with the goals we scored. I was delighted to get the first one and get it started and I thought we had good control of the game from there on in.

“Leverkusen were a threat at set-pieces all night really, they’re a very big team. But overall we had control and we scored some really good goals tonight.”

Moyes further added that he hopes Rooney will become the all-time leading scorer at the club and hailed the former Everton star as world-class. United are now top of Group A ahead of Shakhtar Donetsk, who secured a 2-0 away win at Real Sociedad.
