Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has explained Radamel Falcao played in the club’s Under 21 side earlier this week to boost his confidence.
The Colombian international is on a season long loan from AS Monaco and has struggling since switching the Ligue 1 club for Old Trafford. He has spent the last few matches on the bench as an unused substitute and featured in the Red Devils’ 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur Under 21 side.
For the same clash, right-back Rafael and goalkeeper Victor Valdes also featured in the clash. The Dutch manager hailed the attitude shown by Falcao and claims getting more playing time under his belt will help him regain his form, which could be crucial for United’s first team for the remainder of the season.
“Of course, the second team level is lower but that is also good that a player from the first team is playing much more minutes at a lower level, because then he can build up his confidence,” Van Gaal told United’s official website.
“I have 25 players and all of the players can play the next game. I have to maintain the rhythm of the game with every player. I have read about the ‘big humiliation’ for Falcao, but also Valdes was playing and Rafael as well. Michael Carrick has also played for the second team this season.”
“That shows the professional attitude of the player but also the management of the club. It is not a humiliation, it is a professional attitude. In a training session, you never reach the intensity of 90 minutes,” he added.
