Louis van Gaal has confirmed young striker James Wilson will leave Manchester United on loan to the Championship club. He will join Adnan Januzaj to leave the club on temporary basis as the Belgium international joined Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan deal.

The Red Devils signed French international Anthony Martial from AS Monaco on the deadline day of the summer transfer window. His arrivals has forced Wilson drop further down the pecking order behind Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini, who is expected to play up front.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager admitted he could not promise both Wilson and Januzaj regular playing time. Thus the Dutchman has urged the duo to go out on-loan to get regular playing time.

“I have said to Januzaj that I will give him opportunities in the position of nine and maybe of 10. I have done that and then decided that, no, it would be better for him to go to another environment, maybe he will play more with them than me and we can see if he develops himself,” Van Gaal said.

“It is the same thing that I have said to James Wilson. I have said the same thing, only James has to go to a Championship club, so then I can call him back if my striker is injured. Then we need him and then he would have more playing time.

“But for Wilson, another year in the same way as last year is not good for his development. It is not good for Januzaj either. This is why we let players go on loan and we don’t sell, because we believe in the quality of Januzaj and in the quality of Wilson.”

Derby County are interested in signing Wilson on-loan. The deal will see United have an option to recall the player if needed and the Championship club’s manager Paul Clement confirmed his side’s interest in Red Devils youngster.

“It is a possibility but not a certainty. We have shown an interest. He is a very talented player and a number of other clubs have shown an interest as well. We are waiting to hear back from Manchester United,” Clement explained.
