Louis van Gaal claims Tyler Blackett has a great potential to succeed at Manchester United and that was the reason behind handing him a new deal.
The 20-year-old signed a new deal on Thursday, which will keep him at Old Trafford till 2017, with the option to further extend it by one year. He becomes the second defender to commit his future to the Red Devils under the Dutchman’s reign.
The centre-back came up through the ranks of United’s academy. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager has expressed his joy after Blackett committed his future to the club.
“I am delighted that Tyler has signed a new contract. He is another young player that has risen through the Academy system to break into the first-team squad this season,” Van Gaal told United’s official website.
“Tyler has great potential and I believe he is at the right club to continue his development and progression to become a great defender.”
Meanwhile, Blackett has also expressed his delight and revealed he is thrilled to have signed a new contract with the 20-times English champions.
“I’m thrilled to have signed my new contract. I have supported United all my life and have been here since I was eight years old,” Blackett told the club’s official website.
“To come through the Academy and make my debut this season was a dream come true. I want to keep improving within the first-team squad with the help of the manager, coaches and the players around me.”
Blackett is the second defender in recent times to sign a new deal after Paddy McNair recently committed his future to United.
